What the SW Michigan Affiliate doesSW Michigan Affiliate Grants 2004Since its inception, Komen SW MI Race and the SW Michigan Affiliate have awarded $408,500 in grants to help eradicate breast cancer in southwest Michigan. The SW MI Affiliate awarded ten breast healthcare grants in March 2003 totaling over $100,000 for the second year. "Increased unemployment, trimming of medical insurance plans and state budget cuts make our mission to help eradicate breast cancer in southwest Michigan more important every day," said Affiliate President Rosemary (Bunny) LaDuke. "The Affiliate wants to narrow the disparity of medical care in our community so everyone has equal access to quality breast healthcare," LaDuke said. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, LaDuke explained. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 7,300 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Michigan last year. Affiliate Grant Chair Ann Feldmeier is a six year breast cancer survivor. Prior to her diagnosis, she practiced individual and marital counseling in a private practice. She appreciated the 2003 Grant Committee member's time investment, their individual expertise and their skills at consensus building. "How fortunate for Komen to have such competent and giving individuals willing to work so many hours on this project," she said. Five community members joined Grant Chair Ann Feldmeier to review 13 grant applications:
"By reviewing the 2003 grants, we became part of a very significant process that in effect may grant a longer, better life to many women throughout SW Michigan," Young said. "The Komen Affiliate is very appreciative of all it's volunteers and realize the time constraints everyone faces these days." Ten Grant Awards March 2003 Totaling: $100,001
