How to help eradicate breast cancerJoin us in the race to find a cure for breast cancer. Is the cure for breast cancer around the corner or off in the distance? No one knows, but we do know we're getting closer all the time. Which is why we're more determined than ever to keep pushing ahead. After more than two decades in pursuit of a cure, the Komen Foundation and its Affiliates refuse to rest until we've reached our goal. Volunteer OpportunitiesWe must not for a moment underestimate what we are up against. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women between the age of 40 and 59. In the next three minutes, a new case will be diagnosed. An estimated 192,200 women and 1,500 men were diagnosed with breast cancer during 2001. Most women will have no known risks factors for breast cancer. It is a random disease touching all of us. We do not know what causes breast cancer. There is no known cure at this time. Early detection with follow-up continues to be the key to survival. Over 95 percent of women with early diagnosed breast cancer will survive for more than five years. Mammograms, monthly self-breast exams and regular clinical breast exams are vital. You can help put an end to breast cancer. Consider volunteering. The SW MI Affiliate is completely built on volunteers from the community. There are no paid staff members. Volunteers are needed throughout the year. Let us know when you are available, and the amount of time you can donate. Call 1.877.566.3679 or email swmi@komenswmichigan.org Why not join one of our committees today? The Affiliate is here to make a difference in SW Michigan.
