2010 Komen Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure®

2010 marks the 14th anniversary of the Komen Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure®. The Race is a certified USATF5k (3.1 mile) course with running and walking events for everyone from competitive runners to families.

The Day will include Opening Ceremonies, the annual Celebration of Hope Parade of Breast Cancer Survivors, a 5K competitive run, 5K non-completive run/walk and a 1 mile family walk, Closing Ceremonies and Awards.

Where to find information on-site
Stop at the “Ask Me” tables for information or ask one of our Race for the Cure volunteers – easily identifiable by their yellow volunteer t-shirts.

Lost and Found and Stuff Check
Located on west side of Edwards Street next to the RE/MAX balloon.

Port-a-Potty Locations
Portable lavatories are located on the east side of Edwards Street near the RE/MAX balloon and adjacent to the Kids Korner just outside the Festival area.

Registration and Packet Pick-up

The registration tent is located on Edwards Street.

If you are Pre-registered Un-timed:

  • Go to the table with the sign that says  PRE-REGISTERED RACE BIBS.  Pick up your bib
  • On your way out pick up your race t-shirt

If you are Pre-registered Timed Runner:

  • Start by finding your bib number on the large pink alpha board located just outside the registration tent
  • Go to the table with the sign that says TIMED RUNNER PACKET
  • On your way out pick up your race t-shirt

Race Day Registration:

  • Fill out a registration form located on the tables outside the Registration Tent in front of the pink alpha board
  • If you plan to participate un-timed, go to the table with the sign that says UN-TIMED REGISTRATION.  Pay your registration fee and receive your  race bib
  • If you plan to participate as a timed runner, go to the table with the sign that says TIMED REGISTRATION. Pay your registration fee and receive a race packet
  • On your way out pick up your race t-shirt

Turning in Pledge/Donations

Pledge/Donations – checks and cash can be turned in at the Pledge/Donation tables located inside the Dome.

To be eligible for Pledge Prizes, all donations need to be in an envelope with the Fundraising form filled out.  Click here to download  a copy of the Fundraising form. Fundraising envelopes are available on the tables out-side the Dome.

Prize level determination will be made and certificates to claim Pledge Prizes will be issued.  The Pledge Prize tent is located just outside the Dome.

Pledge Prizes

If you have raised more than $50, please check in  with the Pledge/Donations volunteers  in the Dome to receive your certificate for pledge prize awards.

Take your certificate to the Pledge Prize Tent located just outside the Dome to claim you pledge prize(s).

Teams

Team Captains need to sign in at the Team Captain Table located on Edwards Street Team signs will be distributed and team captains will receive their Team Captain gift.

Prior to Race Day, team captains should set up a time and place to meet at the Festival site. Team photos are free and will be taken before the opening ceremony from 12:00 – 1:30 and after the Race at 2:45 – 3:15

Survivors 

Survivor pink t-shirts and caps

The National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program is sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha and RE/MAX. Breast cancer survivors receive a pink survivor t-shirt and cap courtesy of Zeta Tau Alpha and RE/MAX. Survivor t-shits can be picked up at the Registration tent and pink caps will be available at the Zeta tent located next to the Survivor Cafe

Survivor Café

12:00 – 1:30 p.m. A light lunch is available for registered participants who are survivors and their registered co-survivor guest. Lunch is provided courtesy of Panera Bread. Survivors will receive a special survivor gift.

Honoring Survivors and Remembering Loved Ones

Opening Ceremony  - Celebration of Hope

The Arcadia Festival Site Stage is the focal point of the Opening and Closing Awards Ceremonies, when survivorship is celebrated, memories of loves ones are honored, awards are given, songs are sung and everyone is inspired to fulfill the promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever!

Survivors line up at 1:15 at the Survivor Café to participate in the Survivor Parade leading to the stage and the Opening Ceremonies.

At 1:25 the Opening Ceremonies begin.  Please join in this moving tribute that is the essence of the Komen Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure. We  honor breast cancer survivors and celebrate the lives of those who have died from the disease.
 
Back signs

Back signs “in memory of” or “in honor of”  a loved one can be filled out and worn on participant’s race t-shirts.  Honor the people in your life who have been touched by breast cancer, obtain  back signs at the Zeta tent next to the Survivor Café.

Memory Wall

For the second year, a special Memory Wall located across from the Kids Korner near the Eleanor Street entrance. We remember and celebrate loved ones who have died from breast cancer.

Activities and Places to visit

Komen Tent

Visit the Southwest Michigan Affiliate Tent located in the center of the plaza. Breast Health Educational information materials will be available. I AM THE CURE will be conducting fun interactive activities  to promote breast health awareness. Our Public Policy  Advocates will be on hand to tell you about Komen’s work influencing public policy related to beast cancer.

Sponsor Booths

Located throughout the Festival Site, our sponsors are here to offer food, beverages and information as well as inspiration!  Please visit out sponsor booths and thank them for their support – we couldn’t do the Komen Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure without them!

Kids Korner

Located at the playground on the west side of the Festival Site, kids accompanied by an adult can play on the playground equipment, the inflatable bouncy gym, get pink ribbon tattoos, have their face painted and enjoy girl scout cookies. Hosted by Mattawan Junior Girl Scout Troop 689.

Shop for the Cure®

Open 12:00 – 3:30.  Commemorative merchandise for children, women and men. Pink Ribbon Classics merchandise available. Shop with cash, check or credit card.

Stuff Check  - FREE!

Leave your “stuff” at our free Stuff Check sponsored by Two Men & a Truck, located on Edwards Street next to the RE/Max balloon. Pick up you “stuff” after the Race. Open 12:00 – 3:30.

Walk/Race Information

Participant Safety Information

All participants, including children, must be registered.  There will be no access without a bib (race number). Be sure to put your emergency contact information on the back of your bib.   Plan for heat and bring sunscreen, hats and a bottle of water from home as an extra precaution.  Water will be provided at the start of the Race, at two water stations at 1 mile and 2 mile and at the finish line.

For the safety of all participants, pets, inline skates and bicycles are discouraged from participating in this event.  For everyone’s safety, families with strollers, please line up at the rear of the crowd.

Race Start

The Start Line for all of the events is located on Water Street. 

Use Edwards Street to enter the starting line staging area. Head towards the RE/MAX balloon. (The pedestrian bridge will be closed and you will not be able to access the start from the bridge.)

Please line up in the sequence of your event:

Timed 5K Runners closest to the Start line
Un-Timed participants next
1 Mile Family participants next.

Look for the volunteers holding signs to indicate your location to line-up.

Starting Times:

2:00 p.m. -  5K Run and 5K Walk/Run (both timed and untimed)
2:05 p.m. - 1 MILE Family Walk

Finish Line

The finish line is on Eleanor Street directly west of the Arcadian Festival Site

At the finish, please DO NOT STOP!  Move through the chute to the water and food tables

Proceed to the Festival Site and enjoy the Sponsor booths and Awards Ceremony.

Awards Ceremony

The Awards Ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m.. race results will be posted on large boards near the finish area.  Complete race results will be available on-line.
