She could be somebody's wife or some kid's mother
somebody's sister who waits for her brother
She says she's stayin' and so she does
Got lots to do and she hurries because
She might go quiet she might go late
She might live long with a long slow wait
She sees the blessing but she feels the curse
She says it could be better but it don't get worse
She's your daughter or your mother, your sister, a friend
We are what we are when we come to the end
Grandmother, Great Aunt, great and grand
When you don't know the way she takes your hand
She wore the black dress in summer
She watched the train, slow-not faraway
She waves a long time through water
She won't go away, don't go away
Your legs will carry you to where you go
You head for the finish, you move so you know
You breath you see you think you live
We smile we cry we take we give
If you think somebody else has got it so good
You're thinkin' you shoulda'-you coulda'-you would
Don't look far and don't look wide
Look to your left and look to your right
It was the middle of the night in mid-September
Like yesterday or so I remember
He held her hand he kissed her head
The last night layin' in her own bed
She walks the one path less traveled
She says the long run is worth the pain
She knows the way to where we're all going
He can't turn away, don't turn away
One long push, after another
You wonder when it's comin' and you can't run for cover
Givers her courage to a daughter of a mother and a sister
She waves through water to her boys and her mister
She says she's leavin' and so she does
Through glassy eyes I remember what it was
It was the middle of the day in late July
She was standin' in her kitchen with a tear in her eye
With a smile so big it could warm up the sun
She said the trouble with the many is it's made up of ones
You and me, her and him, us and them, we all gotta swim
Gotta swim for the shore and head for the finish
The fear of leavin' I can't let diminish
All the joy I feel, all the love I give
We're all gonna go so get busy and live
Live through your daughters and live through your sons
Live in the many, they're made up of ones
Ones who hurry and ones who wait
Ones who help and ones with faith
The faith that carries till it lets you down
Nice and easy with your feet on the ground
From the ground we come, to the ground we'll go
Livin' for the day, cuz' you never do know...
She won't go away...
Don't go away...
