Komen Foundation

On the 20th Anniversary of the Komen Foundation, we renew our promise in the fight against breast cancer to remain dedicated to advancing research, education, screening and treatment so that one day we will have something miraculous to celebrate: the end of breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation is approved as a participant in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and is a national federation member of Independent Charities of America (ICA).

Where We've Been:

1982:
The Komen Foundation holds its first fundraising event, a women's polo tournament and lawn party. The first grant is awarded: $30,000 to MD Anderson in Houston and Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
2002:
Since its inception, the Komen Foundation, with its Affiliate Network, has raised $450 million for the fight against breast cancer. Nearly 80 cents of every dollar raised by the Komen Foundation supports mission programs and services.
1983:
The First Komen Race for the Cure is held in Dallas, Texas, with 800 participants.
2002:
The Komen Race for the Cure® is a series of 112 Races in the US and three international Races with 1.4 million participants expected and is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world.
1989:
The Komen Foundation expands its grassroots approach by adding its first "chapter" outside of the Dallas area in San Francisco, California. Chapters are renamed Affiliates six years later.
2002:
The Komen Foundation has more than 75,000 volunteers working through a network of more than 100 US and international Affiliates, making it one of the most progressive grassroots organizations in breast cancer today.
1989:
1.800 I'M AWARE®, the Komen Foundation's National Toll-Free Breast Care helpline, is established to provide callers response to questions, local resources and moral support.
2002:
The 1.800.I'M AWARE® Helpline is answered by rained, caring volunteers whose lives have been personally touched by breast cancer.
1990:
The first community grants are awarded by Komen Affiliates.
2002:
Komen Affiliates across the country fund a variety of community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved.
1994:
Komen funded researcher, Mary Claire-King, MD, discovers the gene mutation BRCA1, an indicator for inherited forms of breast cancer.
2002:
Since its inception, the Komen Foundation has awarded nearly 700 international grants totaling more than $87 million for breast cancer research projects. The Foundation remains the nation's largest private provider of funds for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
1997:
The first Komen Foundation websites are launched to provide the latest breast health and breast cancer information, as well as Komen Foundation news and activities.
2002:
The Komen Foundation's website, www.komen.org provides up-to-the-the minute information about research findings, clinical trials, local outreach programs, volunteer opportunities, events and Komen Foundation programs and partners.
